How can we introduce neurodiversity to kids?

I animated and narrated a trailer for a hypothetical YouTube series on this topic.

In a society that values individuality, why are some differences diagnosed? While these conditions can lead to frustration, anxiety, self-blame, and depression if left untreated… they can also lead to curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving. It’s time to appreciate neurodiversity and end the stigma by celebrating strength.

Research and ideation phase

Scientific research shows distinct advantages in people diagnosed with mental “disorders.” I wanted to inspire people to accept these unique traits–not just in others, but also in themselves. Key words emerged from the research and from my personal experience: adventurousness, creativity, and problem-solving. Before delving into the design phase, I created a mood board based on my research.

Creativity and problem-solving

Using images from the trailer, I created brightly-colored poster mockups that would intrigue people of all ages. These energetic posters reflect the values and strengths of the neurodiversity movement.

Celebrating neurodiversity starts with kids!

I chose YouTube as my preferred platform, because I wanted to reach a tween audience. It’s around this time that kids start to worry more about fitting in and being “normal.” Kids with a diagnosis of ADHD, dyslexia, or autism can take comfort in knowing that their difference can be their strength.
