Wielding a BFA in Visual Communication and minor in Art History, I love collaborating with talented people who are passionate about designing a better world.
When I’m not working on a project, I geek out over great pieces of design: websites, posters, TV shows, and video games.
My ideal day starts with a cup of coffee and a few rounds of fetch with the cats. When I want to relax, I take outdoor walks or watch shows that explore human nature, imagine new worlds, or celebrate the arts. I also love to learn about obscure topics, create handmade cards, and write sci-fi/fantasy stories.
Strategist / Editor / Collaborator
I wear a lot of hats! I work best when designing solutions with those who will be impacted, or when providing tools or tips for those with important stories to tell.
My experience includes the highly technical – such as updating and formatting healthcare facilities funding reports – and the wildly creative. Some of my latest collaborations have been in the creative writing sphere, where I have done proofreading for multiple fiction novels. Beyond the realm of human collaborators, I’ve also worked in the life sciences, contributing to published papers in scorpion behavior and freshwater ecology.
In everything I do, I aim to create excellent work that not only meets the client’s goals but also has a positive community impact.
Design / Thinking
Although it can be tempting to jump onto a computer and begin creating a solution immediately, research always comes before sketching or writing in my process. This usually consists of learning about historical context, target audience, and existing solutions.
After an initial research phase, I start sketching ideas and deciding which medium would be most appropriate to communicate a message. This could include creating mood boards and nailing down key words, and it’s where I explore a range of ideas.
Throughout the design process, I touch base frequently with those impacted (and the intended audience) to ensure that the website, app, article, etc. is clear and engaging.
Art / History / Research
Although much of my work is technical in nature, I’ve also made a lot over the years for personal projects. Even when the end result is small, creating something new can be a way to more meaningfully engage with the world around us and see connections where we might not have otherwise.
The shape to the left contains an alphabet of one of the most fun font families in an asterisk that looks almost floral.
This duck was inspired by a Pictish symbol stone from the 7th or 8th century.
The insects (above) were created for a poster, and the knight was created for a Valentine’s Day card.
The DNA strand (above) was used as a stencil on a vase, and the crystal (which became a sticker) was inspired by a movie.
